About me

Dear reader,

I’m Mara, but some people call me Marita or Maravilla. I was born in 2000 in Quito, Ecuador, and my love for music started early. I studied piano for nine years at the Conservatorio Superior Nacional de Música in Quito, where I graduated in 2016. Later, I earned a Bachelor’s in Musical Arts with honors (Summa Cum Laude) at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (2023), focusing on Composition for Contemporary Media, and a Master’s in Composition for Audiovisual Media at the Katarina Gurska Institute in Madrid (2024).

I have a deep love for composing for piano and strings. There’s something about their sound that feels like home, and I incorporate them into almost everything I write. My experience includes working on several short films: “Cuando los cerdos vuelen” (2018), my cousin’s graduation project; “¿Para qué están las amigas?” (2023); and “Adara” (2024), which won the Best Music award at IRTVE, a recognition I proudly shared with my talented colleagues Martín García and Joaquín Lorenzo.

Currently, I’m based in Madrid, continuing my journey as a composer, arranger, and educator. If you’re looking for someone to bring your vision to life through music, let’s connect. I’m always excited to collaborate with passionate creators on inspiring projects.

Best regards,
Mara Villavicencio

AUDIOVISUAL COMPOSITIONS

polini

Polini is an audiovisual project that I personally assembled and edited. The footage was sourced from the Prelinger Archives, a repository dedicated to preserving cinematic culture. I composed the music for a string quintet and flute, an ensemble that, in my view, beautifully evokes the essence of nature.

NIPA

NIPA is a collaborative video game where I worked alongside three other composers and sound designers. I crafted music using various synthesizers, creating rich sonic textures that immerse players in a quiet and soothing atmosphere.

¿Para qué están las amigas?

¿Para qué están las amigas? (What Are Friends For?) is a short film by the Instituto del Cine de Madrid in which I participated. The music ranges from an allegory to flamenco-inspired melodies to synth-driven basslines and metallic drum patterns.

Adara

Adara was a short film produced by IRTVE in which I collaborated with composers Martín García and Joaquín Lorenzo. We were honored to receive the Best Soundtrack Award for our work. I contributed to composing beats and the string section for the horror score.

Spring

Spring was an academic project for my final degree. The short film, originally composed by another artist, was sourced from a platform offering films for scoring. I created a new soundtrack using a full orchestra to evoke a magical atmosphere for the charming animated characters.

The lost piano

The Lost Piano was another academic project for my final degree. The short film, originally composed by another artist, was sourced from a platform offering films for scoring. I began by using synthesizers to create a dreamlike atmosphere, gradually introducing strings and flute towards the end. The piano makes a single appearance at the very end of the film.
